The plenary session of ITW opened with various telecom CEOs and business leaders pondering whether the industry has reached the tipping point of switching to an all IP environment. Dave McGlade, Intelsat CEO, answered with a resounding "yes"!TDMA what?? Yes, the panel actually discussed switched minutes. Wow, haven't heard that in a while. Clearly Intelsat was odd man out, with a global network that carries about 3,800 television channels worldwide and has seen regional satellite utilizations sky-rocket as emerging market ISPs race for IP connectivity and global companies extend networks.
Dave McGlade challenged the audience to recognize that the rest of the telecom world has moved on--and that no one should assume that switched voice will continue on--as was asserted by one of the panelists. IP is already one of the dominant forces in our business and Intelsat's investments reflect the requirements for IP on land and for mobile applications such as maritime.
